What is baby talk?

Baby talk (BT), or child-directed speech (CDS) is a special speech register used by adults when addressing babies (typically 0 to 3 years old).

Baby talk is a linguistic subsystem regarded by a speech community as being primarily appropriate for talking to young children; it consists of intonational features, patterned modifications of normal language, and a special set of lexical items.
